Attractions
Kos Town
Kos town is full of ancient sites, souvenir shops, tavernas, and endless al fresco restaurants and lively bars. Gentle stroll along the town’s seafront in the evening is one of the most recommended things to do in Kos. If you head for the Castle of the Knights, which dominates most of the town, you will get a panoramic view of the Gulf of Kerme to the right, and a picturesque Kos harbour to the left.
Hippocrates Plane Tree
In the ancient old town square, the Plateia Platanou, you will find the famous Hippocrates Plane Tree. It was here, a legend says, where the world's first doctor, Hippocrates, practised. Even though the tree is believed to be only about 300 years old and the first doctor practised several thousand years ago) do not let this put you off - it is a charming and free attraction to visit.
Asclepion
This is a large complex of ancient ruins set on a wooded hill 4km south west of Kos Town. From the top of the Asclepion you can enjoy breath-taking views of the surrounding villages, olive groves, beaches, sea and the mainland of Turkey to the east. This place was a religious sanctuary/hospital from 500BC to 500AD. People came from all over the ancient world to visit the Asclepion's doctors, to use the healing powers of the centre and pray to their Gods. Even today, the Asclepion has a serene ambience.
Paradise Beach
The beach is situated on the south coast mid-way between Kardamena and Kefalos resorts. It is a beautiful beach, with fine golden sands and gentle shallow waters.
Bubble Beach
This beach is so called because the water here is full of bubbles due to volcanic activity in the area. The bubbles rise from the sea floor, so just a few yards from the beach you can swim through streams of bubbles.
Hot Spa Bathing
Therma Loutra is located roughly 12 km out of Kos Town. A stream of hot water spills into an enclosed rock-pool from a gap in the rocks, creating a superb natural thermal spa. Best to visit at sunrise; if you can get up that early, you will enjoy an amazing spectacle.
